In observance of International Girls in ICT Day 2025, the Cybersecurity Division of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) hosted a vibrant programme aimed at empowering young women to pursue careers in the Information and Communication Technology sector. The event aligned with the global theme “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation”, and brought together students, professionals, and educators to encourage girls to envision themselves as changemakers in tech.

Cybersecurity Director Ms. Muriana McPherson opened the event by reminding attendees that technology touches nearly every part of our lives—from learning and connection to identity and purpose. She urged the girls present to “take up space” in the ICT world and see themselves standing at the threshold of opportunity. Her message highlighted the need to eliminate barriers and build confidence, stressing that empowerment begins with equipping youth with the tools and courage to thrive.

Building on that vision, Dr. Andreasa Morris-Martin, Head of Computer Science at the University of Guyana, shared that digital transformation isn’t just technical—it’s cultural. She emphasized the importance of diverse voices in shaping future technologies, stating: “The story of technology is that it moves so fast, it sometimes forgets people. But we need your voices. Your ideas.” Dr. Morris-Martin also encouraged girls to help design solutions for Guyana’s unique needs, reminding them that innovation must be local, inclusive, and community-driven.

The event featured a dynamic panel discussion with women leaders from NDMA, the Telecommunications Agency, and other ICT departments. Panelists shared personal stories, career insights, and advice for navigating tech spaces as young women. Attendees also enjoyed interactive learning activities, including Cyber Sleuths, Roboquest, and AI challenges, which sparked creativity and teamwork.

In its press release, NDMA reaffirmed its commitment to gender equity, mentorship, and capacity-building, noting that women already hold key roles across the agency. The observance of Girls in ICT Day not only showcased opportunities for Guyanese girls—it also reflected NDMA’s dedication to bridging the digital gender divide and building future-ready digital citizens.
